1. Compare the attitudes toward knowledge of Victor Frankenstein and the creature in Frankenstein.

2. Explain how Mary Shelley’s background (either personal or cultural, such as the Enlightenment and Romanticism) might inform one of the themes (science, emotion, or horror) through which we are reading Frankenstein. Support your answer with examples from the book.

3. A number of the characters in Frankenstein are autodidacts. Compare the education of two characters in the book and explain their attitudes towards education.

4. Is Victor Frankenstein too emotional? Or is he not emotional enough? Discuss how emotions can be seen to influence or not influence Frankenstein’s behaviour.

5. Companionship or friendship is a key theme in the novel. Compare the ways in companionship is important for Captain Walton and one other character in Frankenstein.

6. Provide two specific examples of the sublime in Frankenstein. Explain why these are instances of the sublime and what impact they have on a character or the reader.

7. What is the uncanny? With reference to two specific examples of the uncanny in the text, explain how the uncanny helps us understand a character’s behaviour in the novel. 

8. Shelley’s Frankenstein can be read as a novel about discoveries, which are in some ways both successful and a failure. With reference to two characters, explain what their discoveries were, and how these discoveries where both successful and a failure.

9. In Volume 3, Chapter 7, we read: “The die is cast; I have consented to return if we are not destroyed. Thus are my hopes blasted by cowardice and indecision; I come back ignorant and disappointed. It requires more philosophy than I possess to bear this injustice with patience.” Analyse Walton’s decision to return his ship back towards home.
