Gordon (721 and Harriet [68] are a retired couple with 2 children, each of whom have their own young families, one of whom lives interstate. They previously lived in the leafy outer suburbs of but have resolved to consolidate their living area needs and move to the area where they’ve secured a block they’d like to develop as their lifetime home + additional affordance for another occupant who can work from home. This latter ‘+’ will provide them a steady rental income to supplement their superannuation plan
Their block will need you to accommodate the needs of several people. In addition to themselves as permanent occupants, they will have a grandchild stay with them one night/week, and they want to have an additional — independent- small living and work space to be designed on their block which they can rent out. They have a range of ‘types’ of people who they anticipate this might suit and will require you to design with those ‘types’ of occupants in mind. For the purposes of the brief you will select from some options of these narratives of ‘type’ and design specifically for them. Following success and the achievement of recognition in their fields as a Lawyer and Paediatrician respectively, Gordon & Harriet have always maintained an interest in social cohesion and community life. It is their desire that the person to whom they will rent their additional compact living and work space will be someone who runs a work enterprise from home which offers benefit to the immediate community and that community members can access that workspace on foot. Thus you will need to think very carefully about how you manage the planning on your block because the thresholds between areas that are private, areas that are shared and areas that are public facing and anticipating approach by community members arriving for the first time, need to consider wayfinding and clear signals for public access as distinct from private access.
