Assignment Task

When the exam opens, you will be able to access a persuasive essay. The exam asks you to write a rhetorical analysis of this essay. This is not a research assignment. You may not use outside sources to complete this exam, with the exception of looking up the definitions of words in the dictionary. You may not consult with others (including the Writing Centre, WriteAway, tutors, friends, or parents). Your rhetorical analysis essay should adhere to the following structure: Introduction & Summary (1 substantial paragraph)

• Identify the author and the title of the essay.
• Then provide a summary of the essay, including its main claim (thesis) and key supporting ideas.
• Conclude with your thesis: a statement of the essay’s effectiveness as a persuasive essay, specifically referencing how well it uses the three rhetorical appeals.

Analysis (at least 3 paragraphs) Discuss how the author supports his or her argument using all of the following criteria:

• Evidence and Reason. Discuss the essay’s process of reasoning. Identify the types of evidence presented in support of the essay’s claims (e.g. personal experience, facts & statistics, expert testimony, anecdotal evidence, examples from history or current events, etc.), and give specific examples.
• Emotion. Discuss how the essay appeals to readers’ emotions (needs, fears, feelings, and sympathies). Give specific examples.
• Character. Discuss how the writer establishes their character (trustworthiness). Consider elements such as their presentation of credentials, personal experience, presentation of opposing viewpoints, tone, etc. Give specific examples.
