Assignment Task
Task
The final paper for the course is a 4000-5000 word research paper on a prompt, listed below, or on a topic of your choosing determined in consultation with your instructor. This assignment is worth 50% of your final grade. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate your ability to critically analyze human rights issues using ideas and materials from the class. Your argument should be supported with research, though you should feel free to use readings from the class as part of the material you draw upon in constructing your argument. A strong final paper will have a clear thesis, be thoroughly researched, and be compellingly argued, and be edited and polished to present the ideas as effectively as possible.
Formatting
Please format the papers with one-inch margins on all sides, size twelve font, and double spacing.
Citations
It’s important that you cite all materials that you use in your paper. Please provide footnote citations, using either OSCOLA, or the Bluebook, for ideas and material you reference in the paper. There is not a minimum or maximum number of citations you can use, but you should use readings beyond the syllabus to develop your argument beyond what we’ve covered in class.
Prompts
Prompts for the final paper are listed below. Remember that you can also write about a topic of your choosing, but you must clear that topic with the instructor by Monday, November 15 at the latest to ensure you have adequate time to research and write the paper.
1. What is the strongest philosophical basis for identifying a discrete set of universal human rights? Choose a framework that you find most compelling and defend it. Be sure to develop the basic terms of the framework and to address counter-arguments, including the objections that your framework might exclude potential rights or privilege particular legal and cultural traditions.
2. What is the relevance of Hannah Arendt’s concept of the “right to have rights” in the present day? Select a contemporary human rights issue where you believe people are denied the right to have rights and explore it using the dynamics Arendt identified more than 50 years ago. Consider how Arendt might understand the issue you’ve selected, and evaluate the extent to which her concepts illuminate its stakes and consider any limitations her framework might have.
3. Many of the world’s most pressing political challenges involve addressing wealth inequality and ensuring that society’s most disadvantaged have access to basic social goods, such as health care, education, and housing. Using a case study or case studies, make an argument concerning the promise and limitations of economic and social rights as a tool to address material deprivation. You can focus on the experience of advocates in a specific country (such as Brazil or India) or efforts to enforce a specific right (such as education or health), or use a comparative approach.
