Correlation between Subjective Wellbeing and Personality

Researchers have always shown interest in what makes people happy. Some research has focused on demographic and social-economic variables though there has been more interest in whether people are more satisfied than other individuals based on their personality (Hayes, 2003). It has been established through previous research and literature that people who present with different personality traits tend to experience various degrees of subjective wellbeing (SWB) (Soto, 2015). The term is Subjective wellbeing can be defined by people’s perception on their lives and wellbeing including satisfaction with life, emotional wellbeing, and psychological wellbeing. This is particularly relevant to the Big Five traits. Each Big Five trait represents a range of broad categories–– Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience. Each trait signifies a continuum –– The Big Five model approach is to measure personality; individuals can place anywhere on the continuum scale rather than black-and-white categories, recognising that individuals do not place on the polar end of the spectrum but generally in-between (Tanksale, 2015). There have been different ways that SWB and personality have been tested and measured. Gathering various samples from other participants will determine whether the relationships are consistent (Meléndez et al., 2019).

Extraversion regulates behaviours like the presence of reward through the promotion of positive affect. Whereas, Neuroticism is responsible for avoidance behaviour by signalling punishers through the rise of negative affect (Steel, 2008). In Costa and McCrae’s research, they showed that individuals who are more extraverted, agreeable, conscientious, and emotionally stable gravitate to experiencing more satisfaction in life, regular positive affects, and less negative affect (Hayes, 2003). Life events and personality constructs influence and motivates SWB.
