Assignment Task
The topic
In 2011, R.C.A. Thompson and P. Deplazes (Zoonoses in a changing world: Preface.
Veterinary Parasitology182:1) predicted that, “In the context of emerging diseases, parasite
zoonoses [will] figure prominently, undoubtedly because of the shifting interactions between
humans and other animals.”
The task
Your task is three-fold:
First, critically review and discuss the validity of this statement;
Second, present arguments for which five zoonotic parasitic diseases have the greatest global
impact and, therefore, demand prioritization for control;
Third, select one of these five diseases and describe an integrated program to control it. In
completing your essay/review/critique, you are strongly advised to use authoritative written
sources and refer to them appropriately. Include a well-presented bibliography in your
submission.
In this assessment you are required to complete a 3500 word essay. The essay should be submitted through Turnitin and the Turnitin report
attached to the essay for submission.
Early feedback: An advanced plan for the essay can be submitted in week 7 (details of portal TBA). By this stage you should have a title page
(complete),introduction (complete), observable progress in the main text, conclusions and correct use of referencing. Use of the correct journal
format. The completed essay should be submitted October 29.
You are required to prepare and submit an “Opinion” essay on one question from the
choice below. Please follow these instructions on how to complete your essay.
Title Page: This should include your name, student number, essay title, word count, turnitinscore, key words and an abstract (see formatting instructions below).

containing between 3400 and 3600 words would be considered satisfactory.

Trends in Parasitology (ISSN 1471-4922 in the library catalogue). These can be found here at
this website:

You are advised to have a look at a couple of recent “Opinion” articles in the journal to
ensure you understand formatting and how they appear. You can access the journal through
the library catalogue. An example is also posted on CANVAS (Prosser et al. 2018) and your
essay should be formatted like this.

the essay should be up to date and reflect current knowledge, publications should focus on
those published in the last 10 years (that is since 2006). You are encourage to use a reference
manager (such as Endnote) to help you prepare “in-text” referencing. This fast tracks
referencing (you don’t have to type the references!) and the software is freely available
through the library website. Most demonstrators in the practical classes know how to use
Endnote, but an additionally, an online workshop will be arranged around STUVAC.
You should aim to cite at least ten to twenty relevant articles that you have read and that you use in your essay.
The quality of the references will be considered in the marking of the essay.
They should be from opinion leaders in the discipline and in reputable scientific journals.
The references list are not to be included in the word count.
Tables and Figures: Should be presented as per the Guide to Authors and should be in
colour. You are encouraged to include them as they greatly improve readability of an article.
